The Nest is a community hub on the outskirts of Norwich, created by the Community Sports Foundation. They approached Soak to get a website made up that both shared information about the place whilst also tying in with the aesthetic of their other sites.

My involvement with the project was solely technical – the design was created by the designers at Soak, signed off and passed on to myself.

The site was created in WordPress, so that it was easy to manage on the client’s side (due to their other sites being WP-powered). Soak created their other sites, so this wasn’t a problem.

They required a few things that were different to their other sites, including a Google Reviews section that uses the Cloud Platform API.

The beauty of the project came from it’s simplicity – strong lines and no major moving parts allows the site to be quick and easy to understand, whilst still having a strong identity.

ACF was used to create custom sections within the CMS, so that the user doesn’t have to piece together code from other sections. This allowed it to be drag-and-drop in the CMS (which is a massive plus when all you want to do is place a video section in for instance).

As it was a relatively simple build, without lots of animation and third-party frameworks getting involved, the main challenge was using the Google Cloud Platform to get the reviews to show and get the map working correctly on the Contact page of the site. It wasn’t too difficult to find the solutions to the problems once an account was set up for the site.

Soak’s website can be found here. Artwork used on sites belong to CSF and Soak.
